Bartholomew's Hospital, where he had trained towards the end of the long career of John Abernethy, who attracted large numbers of students to his lectures. He had begun his medical career in the 1820s (L.S.A. 1824, M.R.C.S. 1825) and subsequently gained an F.R.C.S. by examination in 1847, and an M.D. from the University of St Andrews in 1856, during the course of his medical practice in Yeovil.
